Dr. Sam Rodriguez Morhaim is a proud Brooklyn native from the small neighborhood of Canarsie, where he grew up alongside his parents, Julio and Victoria, and his brother Jimmy, the real-life inspiration behind Where Are All My Toys?
A true story seen through the eyes of a five-year-old child navigating fear, loss, and new beginnings. When Jimmy’s family leaves Cuba, he doesn’t understand why nothing can come with him—not even his favorite toys. His world feels upside down, and everything familiar disappears at once. But as time passes, new routines, new friends, and a new sense of security help him rediscover joy and confidence.
This gentle, compassionate story shows how fear can transform into hope as life becomes stable again. His strong sense of family began with his parents’ determination to give their children a normal, safe life, which led them to leave their beloved homeland of Cuba when Sam was very young.
Their dedication to education shaped both brothers’ futures: Sam excelled academically and became a periodontist, while his brother Jaime (Jimmy) became a dermatologist.
Beyond his professional life, Sam is a devoted father to two young men, Alexander and Daniel who both reside in Florida. Sam has two granddaughters, Vanessa and Hayley. Sams commitment to family is what keeps him grounded.
These values: family, resilience, education, and the desire to help others are the heart of Sam’s writing. Focuses on my family’s departure from Cuba as we fled a communist regime in pursuit of freedom and the opportunity to live in a democratic society. What inspired me was that patient of mine would ask me questions about my background and they seemed very interested and I thought why not expressed this in a book originally I was going to write a novel, but I said why not explain this through the eyes of a child since my brother had no idea what was happening to him when he had to leave Cuba.
And this inspired me because many children face this kind of childhood trauma, and the possibility of immigration. He was saved through his artistic talent and able to express himself through art, even though he couldn’t speak the English language.
