She suffered extreme abuse in her first marriage (beaten and raped for 4 years) until he died. She married twice more (divorced now) and had 3 children.
Brenda lost her son Eric 11 years ago, she is a Kidney cancer survivor, diagnosed with PTSD 10 years ago. Now she lives alone with several pets, including her service dog Luna. She enjoys doing improv comedy, storytelling, reading and crafts.
She decided to write about her abusive marriage, hoping that her story might help other women. In doing so she had to write about her time at Fort Hood. She knew that something bad had happened there, but it was in the deep recesses of her mind and it was overshadowed by the abuse at the hands of her first husband.
One night she had a nightmare and relived the rape as if it had just happened. That sent her into a deep spiral downward. At her lowest point mentally and emotionally, suffering extreme PTSD symptoms (depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, nightmares), she needed a way to process her emotions and found an outlet in writing poetry, her writing was raw and dark. Through writing, along with proper therapy, she slowly recovered, although it was a long road.
